Outdoor Education

The Context of Outdoor Education at Headwaters Academy

Taking cues from Richard Louv’s seminal work ‘Last Child in the Woods’ Headwaters Academy does not believe that outdoor education can be justifiably separate from education itself.  For this reason we have selected our site on the Niagara Escarpment where our students can have immediate access to the Bruce Trail, escarpment caves and rock, organic gardens, greenhouses, beekeeping, stream study, and views across the Beaver Valley.  Beyond the opportunities these assets provide our students also have access to three separate sites in the Beaver Valley encompassing over 200 additional acres.

Education cannot be confined within four walls.  Headwaters Academy is committed to ensuring that our students see themselves as part of, rather than separate from, the natural world.
