Headwaters Academy Welcomes Rich Fletcher to the Board

“I hear and I forget, I see and I remember,

I do and I understand.”

Rich Fletcher moved to the Georgian Bay area in the early 1990’s after spending his first 4 years teaching Inuit children in Nunavut.  Rich studied Physical Education and Mathematics at McMaster University and earned his teaching degree specializing in Outdoor Education at Queen’s University.  With over 30 years of teaching in education, Rich has experience teaching children from grades 3 to 13.

As Head of Mathematics at a local secondary school, Rich understood the importance of numeracy while believing that children need to connect learning with understanding within the context of their own interests and experience.

For 11 years, Rich was involved with the “Pursuits” program, a four-credit integrated curricular program for Grade 11/12 university or college bound students.  This program takes an innovative approach to education, where experiential learning is the focus.  These secondary students spend an entire semester balancing academic study with traveling on extended field trips in the outdoors and contributing to improving community life by volunteering. With extensive outdoor experience, Rich believes that spending time together in nature, builds healthy individuals while developing essential social skills.

In his free time, Rich plays in a popular local band and, along with his wife, loves to promote and support live music in the Georgian Bay area.
